Sherry Turkle, a professor and psychologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, published her new book titled "Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology And Less From Each Other." She shares with the readers her point of view on the questions of privacy in the modern world.
The author claims that nowadays people, especially teenagers, don’t even know that they have a right to privacy. A lot of people just don’t worry about their privacy protection. They voluntary give out information about themselves on social networking sites or to numerous companies in exchange for some bonuses.
There is an opinion that such publicity is viable for democracy, but Sherry Turkle thinks that everybody needs to have “a certain amount of privacy in order to get their thoughts together, and they certainly need privacy in their e-mails.” Protecting internet privacy is of crucial importance, and the government should begin its defense with e-mail security.
Another of the author’s concerns are the social networking sites, where sensitive information is available for every user to see. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's CEO, said that privacy is not "a social norm" in modern society. On the one hand, Facebook allows to avoid providing information that can compromise the user, and everyone is always able to protect their account with privacy settings. But on the other hand, if you want to use some applications, for example, location based services, you have to reveal your private data.

Facebook gives people a unique opportunity to stay always in touch with their family and friends. But on the other hand, it also enhances the chances of scams set up to steal the users’ sensitive information. That’s why it is better to protect your account properly, if you don't want to become victim of identity theft. Luckily, Facebook lets us adjust our privacy settings so we can be more protected.
According to the latest changes in Facebook's privacy policy in May 2010, the social networking site divulges your personal data including your name, profile picture, gender and networks and makes it visible to all users. You can’t hide it, but you can still protect your photos and other sensitive information from being accessible for everyone.
It is wise to restrict your private information to "Friends Only" or "Only Me" until you decide that you want it to be accessible. If you don’t want to share all the information with some of your associates, make them "limited friends" and they will be able to access only a cut-down version of your profile. Moreover, you can always remove friends if you don’t trust them anymore.
Consider browsing Facebook with the help of a VPN connection, whilst using wireless public networks. It will protect your account from illegal access from third parties. The usage of a fast vpn connection provides you with reliable protection and it won't cost you a lot.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has organised the e-G8 forum, and has invited personalities like Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook, Eric Schmidt, Google’s Executive Chairman, Jeff Bezos, Chief Executive of Amazon and other famous and powerful names in the circle of Internet and media.
Participants of the forum are going to discuss issues such as Internet regulations, the influence of the Internet on society and economy, protection of Internet privacy, protection of copyright and the right to web anonymity. The results of the event will be reported to the G8 Summit, that opens in Deauville later this week.
The delegates have different opinions about governmental regulation of the Internet. Google and Amazon consider the interference of governments to be unacceptable, because it violates users’ rights. European companies, on the other hand, think that it is necessary to control the Internet in order to eradicate cybercrime.
In a speech given last year, Nicolas Sarkozy showed his vision of the problem: "The Internet is the new frontier, a territory to be conquered. But it cannot be like the Wild West. It cannot be a lawless place, where people are allowed to pillage artistic works with no limits".

The Australian Police arrested Ben Grubb, a 20 year-old journalist working for Sydney Morning Herald. The day before his arrest, Grubb had published an article about how a security researcher could break into someone’s Facebook account and steal their private photos.
The Australian journalist got this information from security expert Christian Heinrich, who conducted a presentation on how to access photos from Facebook users’ accounts that were protected with privacy settings. The published story contained one of the photos "stolen" by Heinrich.
Ben Grubb was released a few hours after his imprisonment, but his iPad was confiscated in order to conduct an investigation. The Queensland police reported that "the investigation is looking at a hacking incident and the subsequent use of the property that was acquired as a result of that hacking".
While governments, politicians and parties are discussing the admissible levels of privacy invasions, social networking sites remain as the least protected places. Facebook’s Privacy Policy pays little attention to protecting internet privacy and defending the users’ accounts from unauthorised access: "We cannot ensure that the information you share on Facebook will not become publicly available. We are not responsible for third party circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures on Facebook".

Facebook is collaborating with Baidu, the Chinese search engine, to launch a new social networking site in China. To be allowed in the country, the site should have censor-friendly options. Facebook is said to have accepted the requirements of the government’s censorship in order to launch the site in China, because this market is potentially profitable for the company.
All the users will have access to the new site, but their stored private data will be made available to the government. “When Facebook users outside China connect with users inside the country, sources say they will need to click through a warning message stating that any material visible to Chinese users may also be visible to the Chinese government,” – All Things Digital reports. Facebook also might be using input and display filters that will not allow Chinese users to see and post things that contradict the government’s policies.
The creation of the site seems like a weak compromise between the company and the Chinese government. After the demonstrations in Egypt and Libya, Facebook became a place for free speech and personal liberties. If the new site is censored, it will be a step toward the limitation of increased internet freedom.

Lately, digital rights activist group Electronic Frontier Foundation has prepared a report that studies the protection of users’ privacy given by IT corporations. It looked at twelve companies and found out whether they inform their customers about government requests for user data and whether they defend users' privacy in courts and in Congress. Among the companies on the report we can find Apple, Amazon, AT&T, MySpace, Skype, Google, Facebook, Microsoft and others.
Apple, MySpace and Skype are amongst the companies with the lowest degree of customers’ private data protection. They are not members of Digital Due Process, an organization fighting for protecting internet privacy. And moreover there are fuzzy claims in their user agreements that allow them to disclose private information to the government.
According to the report, Apple's customers are the least protected. Their privacy statement runs as follows: "We may also disclose information about you if we determine that for purposes of national security, law enforcement, or other issues of public importance, disclosure is necessary or appropriate." They do not enumerate specific cases when users’ private data can become available, and that gives them much freedom to act.
Twitter and Google are the best in protecting customers’ privacy. Twitter defended its users’ privacy rights in court and Google created a site that contains information about data requests from the government.
